Solo & British Moth - Maidenhead Open Meeting 12th July

Competitors arrived in bright sunshine and a brisk morning breeze. As they rigged their boats, they enjoyed bacon butties freshly prepared by the galley.

After a briefing outside the clubhouse, competitors quickly took to the water for the first start at 11am. The opening race sent them from the west bank of the lake to the north-eastern corner, back down to the south-western corner, then east again before returning to the north-western corner.

The eight British Moth competitors made a clean start, with 892, Tim Davison of Medley SC, taking the early lead ahead of 859 from Severn SC and 888, Toby Smith of Medley SC. The last boats off the line were the two home sailors: 847, Camille Bilger, followed by 889, Simon Hall. By the end of the first lap, Hall had gained two places and, after several boats ahead capsized, worked his way up to fourth. The second race also started cleanly, with Davison and Smith again out in front, while Hall and Gary Hogan remained in contention in third and fourth.

After a hearty galley lunch, the fleet started cleanly on a slightly revised course as the wind shifted and strengthened. Several lively downwind legs led to more capsizes. Davison and Smith again dominated, with Smith leading Davison to take first place. Hogan and Hall battled for third, with Hall eventually taking the position.

With everything still to play for, the fleet started cleanly. Smith needed a win, while Hall needed third or better. Davison capsized at the fourth mark, letting Smith through, and a tactical error by Hall allowed Hogan past. Smith secured his second win, while Hall recovered on the penultimate leg to snatch third at the finish.

On countback, Smith took first place, Davison second and Hall third, with Hogan fourth. A special prize went to Sebastian, a junior sailor from Medley SC, who completed the series with a huge smile.
